About this species

The salmon pink birdeater is widely considered the best first tarantula for Indian keepers — and for good reason. It is large, fast-growing, and almost always visible in its enclosure (unlike more secretive species that burrow and disappear). The salmon-pink colouration on the leg undersides is subtle at first and deepens dramatically with each moult.

Lasiodora parahybana is a terrestrial species that prefers to burrow when young and settles into open display behaviour as it matures. Adults appreciate a wide, low enclosure — 40×30×30 cm minimum — with 10–15 cm of substrate for partial burrowing. They are fast when disturbed but not typically aggressive; defensive posturing (rearing up, showing fangs) is their primary warning, not a bite.

In India, this species thrives without additional heating in most cities. The primary welfare concern is overheating — above 34°C, specimens become lethargic and refuse food. Keep enclosures in the coolest room available from April to June.

Frequently asked questions

Is the salmon pink birdeater safe for beginners?

Yes — it is widely regarded as the best beginner tarantula. It is defensive rather than aggressive, gives clear warning signals before biting, and its size makes it easy to spot if it escapes. Slings are slightly fragile but juveniles and adults are highly robust.

How fast does Lasiodora parahybana grow?

Very fast by tarantula standards. Under good feeding conditions (every 4–5 days for slings, every 7–10 days for juveniles), a sling can reach 8–10 cm within 12 months and sub-adult size within 18–24 months. This rapid growth is one of the reasons it is so satisfying as a first tarantula.

Does the salmon pink birdeater need heat in India?

No. India's ambient temperatures are well within this species' preferred range of 24–28°C. The bigger concern is summer heat — if your room exceeds 34°C, move the enclosure to a cooler location. Never use a heat mat under this species.
