About this species
The curly hair tarantula earns its name — the dense, wavy hair covering its body gives it an unmistakably soft appearance that disarms even non-spider people. It is also one of the most forgiving tarantulas for beginners: tolerant of humidity fluctuations, temperature variation, and the occasional care mistake that everyone makes when starting out.
Tliltocatl albopilosus is a terrestrial, moderate-burrowing species that does well in a wide range of Indian climates. Its thick hair coverage is practical as well as aesthetic — it retains moisture better than smooth-bodied species and provides some protection from abrasion. This species is notably slow-moving compared to the salmon pink birdeater, which makes enclosure maintenance easier and accidental escapes less likely.
At ₹1,200–₹3,500 for a sling, the curly hair is also one of the most affordable entry points into the hobby. We recommend it as an excellent companion to the salmon pink birdeater — similar care requirements, complementary temperament.
Frequently asked questions
How tolerant is the curly hair tarantula of Indian humidity?
Very tolerant — one of the most forgiving species in this regard. It naturally comes from humid tropical regions and handles the full range of Indian seasons, from dry Delhi winters to Mumbai monsoon, without significant stress. Keep substrate slightly moist on one side and ensure a full water dish. Mist once a week if conditions are very dry.
Is the curly hair tarantula good for beginners?
Yes — widely considered one of the top three beginner species alongside the salmon pink birdeater and chaco golden-knee. Slow-moving, calm, tolerant of care variation, and visually distinctive. Its affordable price point means a mistake during early keeping does not represent a large financial loss while you are learning.
Does the curly hair tarantula burrow?
Moderately — it will excavate a burrow when young but tends to become more surface-active as it matures. Provide 8–10 cm of substrate for slings and juveniles. Adults often settle under or near a hide rather than maintaining a full burrow. This makes them more visible than heavy-burrowing species.
